Oviposition behavior of the mirid Macrolophus pygmaeus under risk of intraguild predation and cannibalism

Zoophytophagous mirid species, that feed and develop either on prey or plant resources, are often found simultaneously on the same host. Hence, these species can engage in both intraguild predation and cannibalism, which can pose a threat to mirid eggs. Ovipositing females may respond to such risks of predation on their eggs by reducing the number of eggs laid or selecting safer oviposition sites. We tested the oviposition behaviour of Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur) (Hemiptera: Miridae) females under the risk of cannibalism by M. pygmaeus males and intraguild predation by Nesidiocoris tenuis (Reuter) males (Hemiptera: Miridae) under laboratory conditions. Intraguild predators and cannibals were introduced during or after the oviposition period. The number of eggs laid (using counts of newly hatched nymphs) and their proportion on each part of a tomato plant were both measured. The results reveal that only cannibalism by M. pygmaeus males after the period of oviposition significantly decreased the number of hatched eggs. Cannibalism thus represents a greater risk to mirid eggs than intraguild predation. The M. pygmaeus female responded to the presence of potential intraguild predators (or competitors) by decreasing the number of eggs laid in the upper leaves. The results suggest that M. pygmaeus females avoid competition by N. tenuis, by laying fewer eggs on upper leaves. Cannibalism could regulate zoophytophagous predator populations under prey scarcity conditions and minimize the risk of crop damage associated with those biological control agents.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Nudity is a cultural phenomenon. If nude bodies were displayed before 1945, shows and entertainment exploiting female nudity as such only appeared under the American Occupation. The analysis of actual and concrete forms of such performances and their evolutions brings out three distinct periods. During the postwar period, representations eroticizing the female body spread widely. From 1947, the displaying of nudity, in the form of tableau vivant, increased in revue shows. It is around the turn of the 1950s that this kind of practice became widespread, with the appearance of theaters devoted to strip shows, especially in Asakusa. These institutions led to a “golden age” of striptease characterized byunbridled creativity, scenic innovations and the establishment of a star-system. Initiated in the 1960s, the third period is marked by an intensification of the sexual content and aspects of the performances

The poet Yoshimoto Takaaki’s career as a critical thinker took off in the 1950s, notably through a widely remarked essay on ideological conversion in which he established an equivalence between converts and non-converts. We argue that his thoughts on ideological conversion were rooted in the polemic work he engaged in – along with Takei Teruo – on the war responsibility of progressive writers. We seek to identify the originality of Yoshimoto’s approach by discussing and presenting the development of this controversy as well as its actors, implications and general intellectual context

Incidence, predictive factors and haemodynamic consequences of acute stent recoil following transcatheter aortic valve implantation with a balloon-expandable valve

Aims: The elastic behaviour (acute recoil) of a valve prosthesis stent following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is unknown. This study sought to determine the occurrence, severity, predictive factors and haemodynamic consequences of acute recoil following TAVI. Methods and results : A prospective angiographic analysis of the stent frame dimensions in 111 consecutive patients who underwent TAVI with a balloon-expandable valve (36 Edwards SAPIEN; 75 SAPIEN XT) was performed. Acute recoil was defined as the difference between minimal lumen diameter (MLD) at full balloon expansion and immediately after balloon deflation. MLD during balloon inflation was significantly larger than MLD after balloon deflation (23.40±2.31 mm vs. 22.29±2.21 mm, p<0.001), which represented an absolute and percent decrease in stent dimension of 1.10±0.40 mm and 4.70±1.76%, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, the predictors of larger recoil were a higher prosthesis/annulus ratio (r²=0.0624, p=0.015) and the SAPIEN XT prosthesis (r²=0.1276, p=0.001). No significant changes in haemodynamic performance were observed at discharge and follow-up in patients with larger recoil. Conclusions : TAVI with a balloon-expandable valve was systematically associated with a certain degree of valve stent recoil after balloon deflation. A higher degree of valve oversizing and the SAPIEN XT prosthesis predicted a larger degree of stent recoil

Sternal reentry in a patient with previous deep sternal wound infection managed with horizontal titanium plate fixation

Redo open-heart surgery and sternal reentry in patients with previous deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) and absence of sternal integrity can be a delicate and morbid task due the lack of a dissection plane between the heart and the surrounding soft tissues. Delayed sternal reconstruction and osteosynthesis with horizontal titanium plating fixation (Synthes) following vacuum assisted therapy (KCI) has recently been proposed and adopted for the treatment of DSWI. We present such a case of a patient who was successfully reoperated for valve replacement three years after coronary artery bypass grafting complicated by DSWI and initially treated with titanium plate fixation
